Jurassic Park

This is the post I never thought I’d write. Only after my Dad and little Sister forced me to watch Jurassic Park with them did I then decide to try the book. And while the book is actually more descriptive then the movie I enjoyed it more as well. Some background, I hate horror and can’t handle suspense. The worst part of the movie for me was when the boy was on the fence while it was being turned on. Also I do not like having to wait and see who dies next. Or when a book’s plot is solely see who survives. Anyway, who lives and dies are totally different in the books and movies. For one thing Isla Nublar was not evacuated before the storm, so a total of five workers are missing by the end of the night. Main characters are fairly different as well, besides the two doctors (side note Grant is a widower and has no interest in his younger student Ellie, though the kids ask him if he is)
there is Nedry, Gennero the firm rep, Regis the Head PR, Dr. Wu, Malcolm, Arnold the park engineer  and Muldoon. To be honest I had to watch the beginning of the movie again to get the characters who where there straight. What confused me was that Samuel L. Jackson actually played Arnold, not the specificly Nigerian gamekeeper Muldoon, whose father was a big game except as well of the African predators. While Arnold’s description is vague, and he could have been dark skinned it just threw me off. Besides Muldoon survives in the book and well I don’t want to give away everything, but survivors are very different in each. Minor differences, Tim is the oldest and just a plain nerd who helps with the computers at the end, Lex is a eight year old tomboy who brought a ball and glove to get anyone to play catch with her. Hammond is different too, there’s no cheerful hugging in the books. The kids are more there as a strategic move, then Hammond’s affection. In the books Hammond is described as a great showman, but not much of a realist, he also seems to have wide mood swings one minute shouting the next unperturbed. Oh, tangent the adult T-Rex doesn’t get anyone in the books though it does attack the jeeps the same way, and chase Grant and the kids all around the park. The younger T-Rex, yes there are two, is the one who kills anyone. Final thoughts the story is basically the same the movie is just a condensed version, anything with Nedry is pretty much the same including the can of Barbasol. Or the movie is at times a mirror of the book, including small things, but not quite in the right place. All and all this adaptation is a solid medium. Because I have a hard time imagining anyone else getting closer the book just has a lot going on in it and getting all that into a movie perfectly sounds impossible.
